INDEX BACK TO FLIGHT COURSES Description Getting Started Student Pilot Licence Circuit Solo GFPT PPL PPL Test Costs Description A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the first step into a career in aviation. The holder of a PPL is allowed to fly an aircraft anywhere in Australia in visual condition by day. It should be noted that a PPL does not allow the holder to receive renumeration for flying an aircraft. Getting Started The first step is to undertake a Trial Flight. A trial flight, which includes your first lesson on the effects of the controls, is undertaken with an experienced instructor with you in the pilot's seat. The instruction will explain the fundimentals of the aircraft to you, and will allow you to take the control for a short period of time. If you elect to continue with your PPL, your trial flight can be added to your new Log Book. If you elect to continue with your flight training we recommend that you obtain a Aviation Medical at this stage to verify that you will be eligable to obtain a Student Pilot Licence. Student Pilot Licence Before you can fly an aircraft on your own, you must be the holder of a Student Pilots Licence. The obtain a Student Pilots Licence you must meet the entry requirements according to the Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR's) Part 5:
top Phase 1 - To Circuit Solo The first stage of your training is from the Trial Flight to Circuit Solo standard, at which stage you will be allowed to fly an aircraft on your own within the circuit area of the airfield, when approaved by an appropriate Flying Instructor. Flying Sessions The following table gives an indication of the hours required to complete each part of the sylibus. These hours should be seen as the minimum hours required to complete each stage of the training.
top Prior to undertaking the navigational training associated with the Private Pilot Licence, a student may elect to undertake a General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) which will quallify the student pilot for passenger carrying privileges in a restricted area. The minimum aeronautical experience of the student pilot before attempting a GFPT isat least 20 hours of flight time of which includes:
* Note that these totals are a minimum. The average is 25 hours to reach a GFPT standard (including Phase 1). This pricing is subject to change without notice. Fixed price training is available on demand. top Phase 3 - Private Pilots Licence
Minimum Requirements
In accordance with CAR 5.77, to qualify to hold a Private Pilot Licence, a person must:
Navigation Tasks
The ideal location of the Bruce Hartwig Flying School allows the instructors to task the student in a way to obtain the most experience from each flying hour. Example Navigation Exercises - Dual
Partners/friends may accompany students on these flights if they have passed a GFPT. Realistic experience to reach PPL standard is 20 - 24 hours for the navigational sequences. Example Navigation Exercises - Solo

Before you can sit a Private Pilot licence test (PPL Test), you must have the following minimum aeronautical experience:
top Costs
Bruce Hartwig Flying School prides itself in its ability, through its computerised training systems and sophisticated aircraft
equipment, to ensure that you are charged only for what you use: - Not an average hourly based training fee that is charged to all students, no matter what the students abilities, nor considering the skills of your instructor. Not all flight instructors are equal; far from it!
The skills and qualifications of flying instructors vary greatly and are regulated by law. Very early in your training yo may only need a junior flight instructor (Grade 3) for your next flight, other times you will require a Grade 2 for maximum benefit or even perhaps a senior Grade 1 is necessary. Naturally each qualification and extra experiences a flight instructor has, the more you will need to pay for their expertise. The chief flying instructor will reccommend the appropriate flight instructor for your next sequence of lessons. If you follow these recommendations you will gain maximum benefit for the least dollars. If you go with a "fixed price per hour, all inclusive rate", you can imagine who you will end up flying with almost all of the time. Your cost will escalate as your hours taken to learn increase. Use the appropriate instructor to minimise the number of flights (hours) needed. You have the ability to control your own costs through appropriate instructors, fuel management, correct aircraft operating procedures and your personal study habits. This program is exclusive to Bruce Hartwig Flying School in Australia and teaches our students the "commercial way" of operating, in the real business world of aviation. This program has demonstrated a significant advantage for our graduates when attempting to gain employment. After-all, it is towards the gaining of employment as a commercial pilot, where the whole training program ought to be focussed. At Bruce Hartwig Flying School, we are focused toward your end goal: - Getting you a job. Our training rates are developed using a base aircraft hire rate, plus actual operating costs such as fuel used for each flight, combined with the charge rate of your instructor for the time you spend with them. As most of our courses are GST free, the Basic Training Rate does not include GST. This is additional where applicable. The way you plan the flight will have a direct bearing on what you will pay. This program will not suit students who wish to sit back and expect to be "given" knowledge and their chosen pilots licence. It will suit those students who want to gain knowledge and experience through their hard work and our professional guidance. As at January 2009, our Basic Training Aircraft Rates are :
$147 per hour for Single engine, 4 cylinder, fixed propeller aircraft i.e. Diamond DA20-C1, $172 per hour Piper PA28-181 Archer $199 per hour Cirrus SR20 $295 per hour for Cessna C206 $499 per hour for Diamond DA42 TwinStar
Fuel is charged at the standard AirBP Parafield Airport rate (no loading). This is usually around 30 cents per litre more than the equivalent unleaded automobile fuel is selling for at the local service station. A Diamond DA20-C1 uses 18 litres per hour in basic training, whilst a Piper Archer will use 32 litres per hour if operated efficiently. The Cirrus SR20 averages 42 litres per hour @150 knots, Cessna 206 around 54 litres @ 130 knots. The new diesel engines of the DA40 and DA42 TwinStar are far more efficient @ 20 and 42 litres per hour respectively. As with all Professionals your Instructor is charged for the contact time spent with you. Flight Instructors start at $59 per hour for Grade 3, VFR flight instructor $65 per hour for Grade 2, VFR flight instructor From $79 per hour for Grade I, VFR flight instructor. A more experienced IFR and Multi-engine capable trainer will charge a few dollars more depending on their experience. The reality of the flight training industry is that senior instructors are very, very hard to come by. Flight schools must pay high salaries to attract and keep these experienced instructors, who could all be airline captains tomorrow if they so chose. Many schools throughout Australia are being forced to close or to cease Commercial and/or Muli-engine Instrument training through lack of suitably qualified flight instructors. Instrument training instructors, multi-engine aircraft instructors and testing officers will charge up to $130 per hour, however you will not require these instructors for your Private or Commercial flight licence training, but you will need a testing officer to conduct your flight tests. When flying solo, you may wish to carry extra insurance to eliminate any damage excess, this is $19 per hour if required. When training with an instructor on board the aircraft, the insurance excess is covered within their fee. top Course Flying Costs (January 2009)
